Anansi and the Tug of War

Traditional | West Africa

Anansi, a clever little spider, challenges Elephant and Hippo to a tug-of-war. Can his wit win against strength in the jungle?

Text Version

Once, in a jungle in West Africa, lived a clever spider named Anansi. Even though he was small, he was very proud of his intelligence.

But Anansi noticed that the bigger animals, like Elephant and Hippo, did not respect smaller creatures. They acted as if size was the only thing that mattered. "They don’t respect us little ones," Anansi thought. So he came up with a plan. "I’ll teach them a lesson!"

One day, he went to Elephant, who was eating leaves. "Elephant," Anansi said, "You are big and strong, but I bet I’m stronger!"

Elephant laughed loudly. "You? Stronger than me? That’s impossible!"

Anansi smiled. "Let’s have a tug-of-war and find out. Tomorrow, I’ll tie a vine to your tail. When I pull, you pull back as hard as you can."

Elephant, still amused, agreed. "This will be funny," he said.

The next morning, Anansi tied one end of a long vine to Elephant’s tail. Then, he hurried to the river, where Hippo was resting in the water.

"Hippo," Anansi said, "You are big and strong, but I bet I’m stronger!"

Hippo chuckled. "You? Stronger than me? That’s a joke!"

Anansi shrugged. "Let’s find out. I’ll tie a vine to your tail. When I pull, you pull back as hard as you can."

Hippo, curious to see what would happen, agreed. Anansi tied the other end of the vine to Hippo’s tail and then climbed up a tree to watch.

"When you feel the pull, start pulling!" Anansi called out.

A moment later, Elephant felt a tug and pulled with all his strength. At the same time, Hippo felt the vine tighten and pulled back just as hard. Neither of them knew they were pulling against each other!

The vine stretched, and the ground shook as the two powerful animals struggled. Each thought Anansi was unbelievably strong. Finally, both were too tired to keep going and gave up.

"Anansi is stronger than I thought," Elephant muttered.

"I can’t believe it," Hippo sighed.

Anansi chuckled to himself. He had shown the jungle that being clever was just as important as being strong. That clever trick made the bigger animals think twice before looking down on the smaller ones.
