The Wolf, The Fox, and The Ape

A sly Fox and gruff Wolf sought justice for a vanished meal; the Fox was found not guilty, but his mischievous reputation remained.
In a forest deep and wide, there lived a sly Fox and a gruff Wolf. The Wolf was often unhappy with the Fox, believing he was up to no good. One day, the Wolf's food vanished and he was sure the Fox had stolen it.
He decided to seek justice. So, off they went to the wise Ape, known to everyone as the fairest judge in the land. The Wolf presented his case, "I had a big, delicious meal ready. When I turned back, it was gone. I am sure the Fox took it!"
The Fox, of course, defended himself. "Why would I do that? I am innocent. I don't even like the kind of food the Wolf eats!"
The Ape listened to them both, pondering on what he heard. After thinking for a while, he made his decision.
"The Wolf," the Ape said, "cannot prove he lost anything, for he has no evidence. On the other hand, we cannot confirm that the Fox has stolen anything either. However, we all know the Fox's reputation."
Everyone nodded, knowing full well that the Fox was often up to mischief, even if this time he was found not guilty. The case was closed, but the Fox received no praise for his supposed innocence. In the eyes of the others, his past actions still cast a long shadow.
