The Donkey in the Leopard's Skin
Vishnu Sharma | India
A washerman disguises his lazy donkey as a leopard for profit, but consequences arise when the truth is revealed.

Once there was a washerman who lived in a small village. He had a donkey that was very lazy and always tried to avoid work. This made the washerman upset, and he always looked for ways to make the donkey more helpful.
One day, the washerman found the skin of a dead leopard. He had an idea and took the skin home. He cleaned it well and carefully covered the donkey with the leopard’s skin. Now the donkey looked just like a scary leopard.
The next day, the washerman took his donkey to the forest to eat. The donkey, now looking like a leopard, walked around without fear. The other animals in the forest were scared when they saw him and ran away. The donkey was happy because he could eat all the best grass without any trouble.
Back in the village, the washerman started telling people there was a wild leopard in the forest. The villagers became afraid. The washerman would still go to the forest, saying he had tamed the leopard. He brought back wood and other things to sell, making a lot of money because the villagers were scared.
For some time, the washerman made good money, and the donkey enjoyed its easy life, eating and resting without working.
But one day, while the donkey was eating in the forest, it heard another donkey braying from far away. Happy to hear the sound, the donkey began to bray loudly in return. When the other animals in the forest heard this, they knew it was not a leopard but just a donkey. They came back and chased the donkey away.
Soon, the villagers learned about the trick. They were angry with the washerman and punished him for his lie. He lost all the money he had earned, and the villagers no longer trusted him. As for the donkey, it went back to its old life of working hard and eating little.
